Book: All the Hidden Truths, by Claire Askew

Things happened for a reason. This is what I mean.

When stores with street-fronts were allowed to open, I went to a local used bookstore. Although my experience that day put me off going there again, I still purchased two books. Fromm now on, unless I am looking for something specific and I can’t find what I am looking for at the library, a thrift store or a big box retailer, that will most likely be the last time. From now on, I am shopping at thrift stores and the remainders sections of big box retailers. That’s where I found the amazing crime fiction, All the Hidden Truths, by Claire Askew.

It is a fantastic book with a story-line I have never read before. Not only did it grab and hold my attention, one of my guy friends could not put it down either. He thought it was great and we both highly recommend it. Below is part of what the back matter says. If I wrote out all of the back cover, I would give the story-line away and I never read it before or after I bought the novel. If I did, I most likely would not have bought this book and would have missed out on a new crime fiction author. Here it is,

The question is one that cries out to be answered—by Ryan’s mother Moira; by Ishbel, the mother of Abigail, the first victim; and by DI Helen Birch, put in charge of the case on her first day at her new job. But as the tabloids and the media swarm, as the families’ secrets come out, as the world searches for someone to blame… the truth seems to vanish.

Just as a head’s up the story is set in Scotland so some of the terminology is a bit different from what we are used to in North America. It was a nice change from our usual “Cop Talk” yet I thought some readers might like to know. Now that I am reading fiction again, Claire Askew is on my radar and I will definitely be reading more of her books.

Claire Askew also the author of, This Changes Everything (2016), What You Pay For (2019), Cover Your Tracks (2020), The Mermaid and the Sailors (2011) and Novelista: Anyone Can Write a Novel (2020)
