Society never fails to surprise me with its unlimited stupidity. This is what I mean.
Early last week, as I was walking home one afternoon, I saw a guy walk past four signs in the window of a restaurant. When he got to the door he pulled and then pushed on it even though it had two signs, which I am guessing said the restaurant was closed due to the COVID-19. After some more pulling and pushing on the handle, he stood back and stared at the door only to start the whole pulling and pushing process all over again. That was scary. What is scarier is that the restaurant was dark because not only was no one was in it all of the lights were off. And this restaurant is so popular that it always has a line up, even in the dead of winter. I am serious. How that guy could not figure out it was closed due to the (global) pandemic can only be explained as, That’s Some Special Kind of Stupid!
Apparently, bartenders in New York City are freaking out that they are not going to be able to pay their rent of $750 per month when they were making $550 a night in tips. Okay let’s say the average bartender made $1,000 in tips per week. That, not including their hourly wage, would be $4,000 a month. If someone who on average earns over $4,000 a month cannot afford rent of less than 18.75% of their monthly income, they are That Special Kind of Stupid! And they really should be made to take financial literacy classes.
March break is travel time for a lot of families. They plan their holidays months in advance and everyone looks forward to time away. But why would so many people put their families at risk of catching the Corona virus, COVID-19 when they don’t have to? Why travel, drive to Florida on Friday the 13th, only to literally turn around and drive back to Ontario on Saturday March 14th? And yes, I am serious, this is a true story. Do they not have the Internet at home or on their cell phone? Do they not have cable TV or an antenna? Has no one told them that there is a global pandemic called COVID-19 and people all over the world have been dying for months, including people in Florida? People just want to get away and I get that, but there are just some people I want to get away from because I fear That Special Kind of Stupid is contagious!
This morning as I was waiting to hear Prime Minister Trudeau, I was flipping through the stations and saw that there were an alarming number of people on the beach in Vancouver who were clearly not practicing social distancing. I guess they forgot that the first TV series to be shut down due to COVID-19 was the show, Riverdale, and it is filmed in Vancouver. And I guess everyone on the Vancouver beaches thought they, like the people partying on the beaches in Florida, are immune to this highly contagious virus. Does everyone in Vancouver suffer from That Special Kind of Stupid, or is it a select few?
